My house still has the original galvanized duct running out from the lower-level laundry room. Is that worth cleaning, or should I just replace the run?

Most of the time it's worth cleaning first, and we'll tell you honestly which way your run is heading. Rigid galvanized in these 1920s-40s houses is actually good duct material — it's smooth-walled and it lasts. The problem is usually the length and the joints, not the metal. A long horizontal run through joist bays from a basement or lower-level service room has more seams than a modern short run, and if any of those seams have separated or been taped over with cloth duct tape that's since dried out, lint escapes into the bay instead of going outside. We'll clean it, look at the joints and the slope, and if the run is compromised we'll say so plainly rather than cleaning something that needs rebuilding. What we do push back on is replacing rigid metal with flexible foil, which is a step backward on a run this long.

What actually goes wrong with dryer vents in this neighborhood?

Two things, and they compound. First is the run length. Laundry set in a basement or a lower-level service room means the exhaust has to travel horizontally through joist bays before it either exits through an exterior wall or climbs to the roof, and every extra foot and every elbow is somewhere lint can settle. Second is the moisture cycle we get up here in the Baldwin Hills. Hot dry summers and Santa Ana dust pack fine grit into the lint, then damp marine mornings in winter dampen the whole deposit so it cakes against the inside of the pipe instead of blowing through. That packed layer is what turns a duct that worked for decades into one that takes three cycles to dry towels. Roof terminations add a third issue: bird and rodent nesting in the cap, which we find fairly often on the older houses here.
