My exterior vent hood is corroded at the flapper — is that worth repairing or should it be replaced?

On the hill it's usually a replacement. Signal Hill sits high and exposed, and the constant sea breeze off the harbor works on the flapper hinge until the damper either sticks open or stops closing flush. Two things. First, the flexible transition duct behind the dryer — a lot of the 1980s–2000s attached units on the old drilling parcels still have the original foil or vinyl flex, crushed into the gap behind the machine because the laundry closet is barely deeper than the appliance. That's where lint packs first. Second, the vertical run itself: laundry upstairs or in a stacked interior wall means a long climb to a roof jack, and lint that doesn't make it out falls back down and collects at the base of the riser. In the older bungalows and the 1950s–60s houses the runs are shorter and usually side-wall, so the failure there tends to be at the hood rather than in the duct.
