We clean from both ends where we can get on the roof safely, brushing down from the jack and working up from the dryer connection so lint doesn't just get pushed into an elbow and packed tighter. A vertical run that's never been serviced often gives up a surprising amount, because gravity drops lint back down onto the first bend every time the dryer shuts off.
