How do I know it's the vent and not a broken dryer?
Simple test: pull the transition hose off the back of the dryer and run a short cycle venting into the room. If the clothes dry normally, the machine is fine and the duct is the problem. If they still come out damp with the hose off, you have a heating element, thermal fuse, or gas valve issue and you need an appliance tech. Does it matter whether the duct is rigid metal or flexible?
It matters a lot. Rigid smooth-wall metal has slick interior walls, so lint keeps moving. Foil accordion flex and the old white vinyl kind have ridges that catch lint at every corrugation, and they sag between joists into low spots where moisture collects. In a damp coastal envelope those low spots turn into wet lint plugs. We swap flexible sections for rigid where the framing allows, and at minimum replace the transition hose behind the dryer with a smooth semi-rigid piece.

There's a bird or rodent nest in my vent. Can you handle that?
Yes, that's a routine call here. A corroded flapper that no longer closes is an open door, and salt aerosol off the sea breeze eats those flappers on exterior wall caps year after year. We remove the nest and packed material from the duct, clear the debris, and then deal with the cause by installing a new cap with a working damper and a proper guard. A guard that's too fine will clog with lint, so we use one sized to keep animals out while letting lint pass. If there are live nestlings we'll tell you and schedule around it.

My duct run seems way too long. Can it be shortened or helped along?
Often, yes. In the redeveloped townhomes and duplexes, dryers frequently sit in an upstairs closet with a duct that wanders to the far side of the building when a much shorter path to an exterior wall exists. Rerouting to that shorter path is the better fix when framing and fire separation allow it. When it can't be rerouted, an inline booster fan with a pressure switch keeps air moving, though a booster needs its own annual cleaning to stay useful.
